This course is a mild dose of Bad Medicine: 1/3 on pavement and 2/3 on nicely maintained gravel. This allows everyone in the family to enjoy the ride and the amazing scenery.
Overview
This out-and-back route offers mild terrain that almost any biker (on any bike) can enjoy. You'll love the views of the western face of the Big Horn Mountains and Shell Canyon, and you'll tour the famous Red Gulch / Alkali Road.
Description
A gravel bike or mountain bike is appropriate for this course. An aid station is located at approximately mile 12 (the mid-point, turn around).
A new course for 2020 incorporates and out-and-back from Shell to the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite. A 2/3 gravel and 1/3 pavement mix allows riders a nice mix of challenge and cruising.
Leaving Shell, head west toward the mountain for a short distance. Take a left onto
Horse Creek Road, take the bridge over Shell Creek and hit the first stretch of gravel. Take a left on Davis lane and work your way back east. Take a left on Beaver Creek Road back towards US Highway 14. Cross the Highway onto Red Gulch Road and the Red Gulch Backcountry Scenic Byway. Stay on Red Gulch Road until the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite where an aid station awaits. Refresh yourself and take the same course back to Shell.
