Need to Know

Tipple Top can be accessed from the Chauncey Park Trailhead via Chauncey Depot, Gop Pile, and Coal Train Trail. Access to the trails in the park is via wooden bridge across a small stream on the eastside of the park. To get to the park, take a left turn (westbound) off of Ohio State Route 13 onto West Bailey Rd, then a left turn onto the driveway about 100 yards up the road.

Tipple Top can also be accessed from the other end from the Doanville Trailhead via Doanville School and Holler Collar Trail or from Utah Ridge Pond Day Use Area via Holler Collar Trail.

Description

Tipple Top Trail is an intermediate natural surface trail that serves as the backbone of trails between Chauncey and Doanville, connecting to Salt Works Trail at its eastern terminus, Holler Collar at its western terminus, and Wild Turkey, Corps Tour, and Knights Labor in between. You'll find yourself weaving around hillsides and between trees as you navigate the trail. Tipple Top acknowledges the region's rich coal mining history, particularly the unique dome-shaped tipple of the old Chauncey mine.

The trail parallels Utah Ridge, the highest elevation ridge in the Baileys Tract, and as a result the area is especially known for its fantastic display of birds during Spring migration. The trail is scenic and flowy with tight-and-twisty sections, but well-graded with no steep sections of trail, despite its higher elevation.
