Description

This trail starts at an intersection with the River Trail and Mesa Verde Trail on the west side of the park. Over the next two miles, it makes a solid climb to the top of a ridge where it meets the Burma Road Trail.

The grade is generally reasonable and you'll negotiate some tight, but doable, switchbacks. Part way up, there is a worthwhile Viewpoint Spur trail to the right that climbs steeply but rewards with a great vantage point. After the viewpoint, the Summit Trail heads through a series of switchbacks to reach the top where you'll have great views of the park and the Cascade Mountains.

To continue on the Smith Rock Loop or return to the parking area, turn right onto the Burma Road Trail. Left goes out to the Gray Butte Trail.
