“A backcountry connector that allows for more loop opportunities along a wooded ridge.
”
There is a seasonal Bald Eagle Nesting Closure on the trail. The full closure is in effect from December 1 to July 1 and there's a narrower closure at all times/year round: it is illegal to approach/be within 200 yards of an eagle nest, per the Bald Eagle Protection Act. The nest is not on the trail so outside of the seasonal closure as long as you do not go beyond the posted signs you are okay.
Description
The Hog Pen Trail provides a shortcut for the Buckskin Trail (113) / Cave Run Trail (112) loop where it cuts along a ridgetop. It shortens the mileage of the above loop and reduces some of the climbing so riders looking for an easier option will gravitate to the trail.
The US Forest Service is working to develop reroutes to allow the trails in this area to remain open year round.
