Description

This trail is an old fire road that travels along Philpott Lake. It is somewhere between singletrack and doubletrack.

Initially, I went to ride the trail because I thought it might be something for a beginner. It was not. The climb from Salthouse Branch is challenging but doable. If you park at the dam and try to come in from the other direction, you'll have to do some bike hiking. There are also a few challenging climbs in between as well as a few creek crossings.

I was there while the mountain laurel were blooming and that was nice (end of May). If you were to do this ride while the leaves were off the trees, the views of the lake would probably be impressive. I could see this being a good trail for training due to its difficult climbs and little risk of injury.
