Description

This 1.5 mile trail around Old Levi Mill Lake will make you think you're in the mountains in places.

Start at the narrow spillway bridge and traverse the dam. Once into the woods, you'll have a moderate climb up to the shelter. From here on, it will be a gradual downhill where you can take in the incredible topography of Poinsett State Park. At the junction with Hilltop Trail, continue downhill on Coquina where you'll traverse a few switchbacks similar to those you might find in the mountains. After crossing a bridge and some steps, take a left on Coquina at the junction with Laurel Trail. Here you'll cross a swamp over an old beaver dam. On the way back to the Ranger station, you'll have views of the lake on the left.

A section of Coquina Trail from the Coquina/Laurel junction through the swamp all the way to the boathouse is closed to everyone indefinitely. Please do not use this area of the trail. The trail beyond the splitrail fence at the top of Coquina (at the Coquina/Knot trail split) is closed to cyclists only due to erosion in the area. Hikers MAY continue past this fence. Hikers can use any trail, cyclists must take the Knot. Jun 21, 2016
