The Trail of Tears was so named after the untimely death of a local rider in a cycling vs. motorist accident. The flume trial was blazed in by this much respected local rider and bike shop owner, and was originally known locally by his name only.

The trail is best ridden west to east from the top of Sallie Barber Road to Weber Gulch Road, then down Weber Gulch Road back to Sallie Barber Road.

Alternatively, the trail can be connected from True Romance via Nightmare on Baldy to Weber Gulch Road and ridden west to the summit of Sallie Barber Road.
