Challenging singletrack with high exposure and a view of the LA basin.

Overview

Features: -none-

Description

This trail starts just north of Inspiration Point. First, you'll head west along the ridge through trees on a narrow trail. The exposure and rock obstacles can be intimidating and the penalty for mistakes is high. The difficulty rating for this trail may feel like double black diamond for some not used to riding narrow trails with exposure.

As you come out from the trees and starting heading south down towards Echo Mountain, you'll encounter some challenging switchbacks, more exposure and grand views of Los Angeles. On a clear day, you should be able to see some of the Channel Islands.

The end of the trail intersects with the Mount Lowe Railway Trail. Head southeast to check out the ruins of the historic Echo Mountain House. Otherwise continue down the Lower Sam Merrill Trail or continue up the Mount Lowe Railway Trail to connect to the Sunset Ridge Trail.

I rode my first shuttle down Mt. Lowe this morning. Rode Merrill, Echo Shutes, Sunset Ridge, and Merrill was by far the best. Best trail I've ever ridden. I will always love El Prieto, but will always be wanting to ride Merrill. Fast, loose, and technical. Some sketchy parts where intermediate riders like me should walk. But damn! This trail is beast! "continue down the Lower Sam Merrill Trail" This is phenomenally bad advice, please do not go down Lower Sam Merrill Trail. The trail is a multi-use singletrack with significant exposure and bikes are certainly allowed on it, however it sees extremely heavy usage by hikers and is generally regarded as a one-direction trail for climbing up to Echo Mountain and/or Sunset Ridge Trail. Best part of the eaton shuttle run. I wish it was easier to get to like Sunset or El P just to ride it as often. Can't wait to get back on this. Mar 19, 2018
