Description

From its intersection with Gurley Street, travel south on Mt. Vernon Avenue for 6.4 miles as it becomes Senator Highway and passes through the community of Groom Creek. The trailhead is on the left-hand side of the road and is well signed.

Groom Creek Loop Trail #307 is a beautiful trail in Prescott National Forest, and makes fora great ride through the forested high country. This trail climbs to the top of Spruce Mountain. A picnic area, a vault toilet, and a lookout tower are located at the top. When it is staffed in the summer months, the lookout tower when it is open to the public and offers stunning views.

From an MTB standpoint do this loop clockwise to get the most of the downhill section. The uphill part is steep, loose with water bar switch backs in places. A bit of hike-a-bike will be in order. After the summit the fun starts but be careful as the trail is loose in spots and equestrians love the area.

Tough uphill and rough conditions heading for the lookout. The way back down was oh-so-sweet! What a great time!

I do not recommend this trail, unless you like hiking more than riding. Mostly loose rock, not fun, trail sucks.

I will do as a shuttle or an out an back. It may have been from the heavy rains but there was more hike-a-bike then riding. I was hoping for a rewa... 9mi — 1h 36m

Lots of rock gardens and loose rock on the decent. Combined with the water bars it makes for a pretty technical trail. It's fun if you're looking for a rough/rocky ride with a few drops. View from the top is awesome. Mar 29, 2015

I rode clockwise from the 307 trailhead off of Senator. The first few miles were delightful. The rest of the ascent, and most of the descent had too much rock, and too many water bars for me. I will definitely return for a hike--without my bike. Glad I tried it once. Apr 13, 2016
