Family Friendly Starts as doubletrack for 2-miles, then singletrack, and it's a loop.

Overview

An easier loop through some North Marquette Trails that dips in and out of the woods. Using both doubletrack and singletrack trails, this is a great option for beginners looking to push their limits and adventurous families.

Need to Know

No restrooms. No parking fees.

Description

The trail starts at the main North Trails/Tourist Park TH off Hwy 550. Stay on the meandering doubletrack (the main Noque xc-ski trail going westward) for about 2-miles, stopping to jump off your bike as you go over the train tracks (don't go down a steep, short hill called Kirby's Hill to your left). Continue on the doubletrack/Noque into the woods, staying left on the doubletrack at an intersection that features the North Country Trail (mainly for hiking).

Enjoy the woods and dodging bugs (in the sweet summer months) for about another 1/2 to 3/4 mile. At another trail, signed intersection, go left (don't stay straight or go right onto the Wildcat Trail) and go back across the train tracks, wallowing in iron ore pellets around the tracks (from the trains taking the pellets to the functioning Ore Dock on L. Superior a short distance away).

Now starts the punchy, bumpy (roots), narrow singletrack. Stay left at the next, quick intersection, and go right at the next, sudden intersection (mostly, look for snow bike route pink signage, staying on the narrow singletrack). Enjoy the ride and at the next, obvious major intersection, go right toward the top of the Dead River Dam, follow the singletrack into the woods and down a nice switch backed and flowy' section.

Stay left at the next obvious intersection along the Dead River. Go up a punchy hill, down, and then curve left and up, away from the Dead River. Stay on the singletrack, cross a dirt road, and soon onto doubletrack through the Cedars. Come out at the bottom of Kirby's Hill, going up a little then right onto EZ PZ all the way back to the start.
