Family Friendly A short, wide track below a beautiful castle—good for a varied day out with the kids.

Like most of the shrub and forest of the south of France, this area closes in the summer due to fire danger.

Need to Know

Beware of hikers! This is a popular walking trail.

Description

The trail is wide and smooth, but narrows on the west side of the castle and becomes a little more difficult before it ends at the stairway up to Les Baux.

Les Baux was named one of the most beautiful villages in France and has over 1.5 million visitors per year. The site has been inhabited since at least 6000 BC. The Medieval fortress seen today was built in the 11th-13th centuries by the fearsome princes of Baux, who controlled Provence for many years. Caves of an ancient limestone quarry at the foot of the hill now house a striking multi-media exhibit of large-scale projected images: Carrières de Lumières.

Les Baux gives its name to bauxite, an aluminum ore first identified here in 1821.
