Overview

This loop incorporates the first half of the Walcott Trail around Burr Pond's northwest side then continues onto singletrack in Paugnut State Forest. The Main Loop returns to Burr Pond on singletrack up and away from the pond itself. Along the way, there are multiple spurs, many with rocky, technical features contributing to a total of about 16 miles of singletrack. There is also a continuation of the Walcott Trail down low around the other side of Burr Pond.

Need to Know

This loop winds around and crosses the blue-blazed John Muir hiking trail maintained by CFPA. Be courteous and yield to hikers. Aside from the Walcott Trail, all singletrack in the Burr Paugnut trail system was built and maintained by the Old Spokes Ride Crew (OSRC)—a bunch of guys over 50 with way too much time on their hands.

Description

Due to the generally rocky terrain in the Burr Pond/Paugnut area, most of these trails call for solid intermediate and advanced riding skills. They are not conducive to beginners. The Walcott Trail around the pond is very rocky and rooty.

In Paugnut State Forest, the trails incorporate numerous rock features with some challenging rollovers and multiple wall rides, especially at the far end as trails climb and descend Walnut Mountain (off Guerdat Road), the highest point in Torrington.

Near the peak of Pine Trail, the loop bends to the left (north) onto The Bear Trail to Little Woodstock (Buttrick), with access to Aunt(i) Nassy 1, 2, 3, Whipping Post, Main Loop Shortcut; aka Mounta's Extension, and Buttrick Road Trail. Past Buttrick Road Trail, the loop continues onto Cabin Trail to Powerlines for close to a mile before continuing onto the Return Trail back to the Walcott Trail and the start of the ride at the northern end of Burr Pond.
