Description

This trail provides a very difficult backcountry experience. You'll find solitude, adventure, and while not truly lost... you'll probably lose the trail multiple times as you make your way along this remote canyon. While some may climb this trail, most will probably descend the trail from the Kobey Park area using FS Rd. 528.

The spectacular views include red rock cliffs, lush meadows, and dark timber forests on steep slopes. Due to the remote nature of the trail, it's length, and the lack of traffic, the meadow portions of the trail are often overgrown with grasses, fully obscuring the trail tread. You'll have to sniff out the trail's alignment in this case, but have confidence that you'll succeed since the trail only crosses the creek twice, and the trail becomes very apparent in the many pine forest sections.

Suggested rides include starting in Aspen (ride Smuggler Mountain Rd. to Hunter Creek area to 4 Corners to Tinpot), or start in Lenado by climbing Larkspur Mt. Rd. (FS Rd. 103.2) and continuing on Kobey Park Rd. (FS Rd. 508) to arrive at the top of FS Rd. 528.

At the bottom of Rock Fork Trail, you'll be at the trailhead parking area where you can arrange to leave a car... or continue on your ride to Basalt on the Frying Pan Rd., and even back up valley on the Rio Grande Trail.
