This is a brutal, unpleasant climb with no shade... but it leads to some cool trails up on the ridge

Description

This is not a fun trail, but you'll have to endure it to get to the advanced, technical trails up on the ridge: Kealia Trail and Kuaokala Ridge Trail. Mokuleia Access Road is paved but closed to vehicular traffic, so you've got no choice but to climb it.

After traveling inland for one mile from the Farrington Highway, the climb begins. You've got about 2.5 miles to climb 1,500 feet and there isn't any shade to speak of. The first mile is "easy" and then you've got a 13% grade climb for the next mile and a half or so. The trail ends mercifully at a gate and the Mokuleia Firebreak Road.

You may be able to drive to the trails up on the ridge from the west via the Kanea Point Satellite Tracking Station, but you'll need a permit in advance from the Department of Land and Natural Resources and even then, the Air Force may still prohibit traffic through the Satellite Tracking Station at any time.

This is a long road that's paved asphalt for a few miles. It can be very hot.
