Overview

This is a route that gives you a very rugged back country feel that is just minutes from town. The rock formations and granite views are spectacular as well as great views of Payette Lake. This is not a heavily travled area by bike, and don't expect to see anyone on the Fall Creek Trail #107, But the Crestline Trail #109 will have ATV traffic.

Overall very little walking required, but may run into deadfall.

Description

Heading north on Eastside Dr. 1/4 mile from the Lick Creek Rd intersection will be a right hand turn with a well visible sign noting the Crestline Trailhead. 1.8 miles up the road is the parking lot.

Clockwise works best to avoid the steep ATV trail climbing.

From the parking lot head north up the dirt road (Fall Creek #107) past a gate that closes the trail to motor vehicles. This fire road will turn into singletrack. At 3/4 mile there is a washed out bridge that requires a crossing that may be difficult in spring conditions. The trail surface will continue to be shale for the first two miles, and then turn into dirt. As you ascend you'll enjoy great views of little Payette as well as Payette lake. At mile 3 there is a U turn where the surrounding terrain becomes heavily wooded and the trail can be prone to fallen logs the remaining way until the summit. It also turns more technical with boulders on the trail that can be ridden by advanced riders.

At mile 6 stay right at the junction to Box Lake, and Blackwell lake will be around the corner. There is another river crossing and it then you'll turn onto Crestline Trail #109. This is a smooth doubletrack trail with some punchy climbing for the first two miles heading out of the lake basin and to a small summit. From the summit it is fast smooth and somewhat chewed up from ATV use, but the climbing is over. At various intersections stay to the right back to the parking lot.

Overall if you enjoy a variety of riding from Technical singletrack, to possible un-maintained hike a bike, to smooth ATV doubletrack, and some pristine alpine granite basin views, you'll enjoy this trail.
