Description

This is a fantastic wilderness style trail that is worth riding in either direction with a shuttle or as an out-n-back. It is possible to do a loop but it requires a LONG and dusty dirt road ride and lots of extra climbing.

Starting from the east end Reservation Divide trailhead, the trail starts out with a well-used trail to Ch-Paa-Qn (formerly Squaw) Peak. There are some steep climbs in here, but all are short and mostly rideable. After a bit of smooth trail, there are some really technical boulder gardens as the trail contours towards the peak. There is a trail sign at the 4-way intersection, go straight on the ride or take a right for a quick hike to the summit for the best views.

The trail gets way more remote past the intersection with more very technical sections, some short brushy sections, and a few seeps for water. The trail contours for the most part until it descends down to a large saddle about Hewolf Peak and views of the Missions to the east.

After more contouring and passing through an old burn area, it's decision time. If you have a shuttle ride, a long fast, and rocky descent to the Kennedy Creek trailhead is in store. If no shuttle is waiting, It might be time to head back. If heading west to east, the climb for the Kennedy Creek trailhead is tough but not very long.
