The trail is located off the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway which cuts through the Wallowa Whitman National Forest and is the only paved access to the trail. The other end of the trail can only be accessed using a network of dirt roads. The trailhead off the road is tiny and nestled among the trees so it can be easy to miss.

The trail will take you up the Lake Fork Creek to Fish Lake and is nice and gradual along most of its length. This trail sees more use at the ends but has had trail work done in the last couple of years so is in good shape overall, but still a very primitive route. This can be done as an out-and-back or you can put together a loop using some roads and possibly some other trails.

The other trails in this area are in varying degrees of upkeep and space is limited before the wilderness boundary. The trail starts in sparse timber and crosses open slopes before entering into more solid tree cover. It is best to start this ride early since the bottom of the trail is going to be warm. Also, be aware of rattlesnakes on the lower portions of the trail.
