Description

Double Rainbow is an extension of the Little Rainbow. The steeps are steeper and the exposure is more extreme. While it is not overly technical with big rocks like many of the trails around the valley, the loose, sandy soil can make for some exciting moments. There are few berms to help keep you on trail and many corners are nearly blind, off camber, and loose. Ride at a safe pace until you're familiar with the trail, and even after that, still ride at a safe pace. Double Rainbow gets much less traffic than Little Rainbow. If you're not sure if you're up for Double Rainbow, try for a little ways. The first mile or so is similar to Skull - rocky and a little rough but a fun climb and a blast coming back down.

Take a moment to soak in some great views of the Collegiate Peaks and Buffalo Peaks in the distance. You transition from the desert pinyons and start to feel like you're on a real mountain.

Double Rainbow can be ridden as an out-and-back or as part of a loop. On the west end, the trail hits a rough 2 track road known as Sand Gulch. Follow that downhill and it starts to loop back towards where you started. Look for the power line tower at the Little Rainbow 110 trailhead.

The rough Sand Gulch 2 track road also heads uphill and eventually meets the Methodist mountain section of the Rainbow Trail. This allows you to connect the Rainbow Trail to Double Rainbow and then to Little Rainbow if you are after a pretty epic ride. Advanced riders only, though.
