Description

Hogback is the primo trail of the Quebradas area. It is a carefully-designed singletrack with moderate grades winding through a beautiful landscape of eroded rock. The landforms include small "hogbacks" or near-vertical blades of rock.

The back valley, sheltered from the Rio Grande corridor to the west, is profoundly quiet with a remote feel.

This is an excellent ride even if not particularly technical. One nice exception is an off-camber step of about 14 inches. Singletrack makes up 1.75 miles of 2.6 total miles.

One option for the Quebradas is to ride the Cerrillos Del Coyote race loop. Park at the west area and take Quebradas Cerrillos del Coyote Widetrack east and south to reach the Hogbacks. Ride this west to Quebradas La Madre Trail which will eventually take you back on widetrack to the parking spot. Distance is about 8.4 miles, 3.8 miles of which is singletrack.

For singletrack enthusiasts, an out-and-back option will let you enjoy the narrow stuff from both directions of travel. Park at the east spot on Quebradas Back Country Byway and take Minas de Chupadero widetrack south to Hogback. Ride Hogback and La Madre out-and-back. Total distance is about 15.4 miles of which 7.6 miles is singletrack. If you have a high-clearance 4X4 the widetrack riding can be reduced further.

Area elevation is around 5000 to 5250 feet. This is about 750 feet lower than even FOO loop in Albuquerque so it is a great winter riding resource. Google Maps shows 78 miles or 80 minutes from the Big-I in Albuquerque to the west parking area.
