The trail closes a half hour past sunset. However the St Louis County parks dept allows a Chubb night ride once per month from the Lone Elk end. See gorctrails.com for more info.

Overview

The West Tyson Park end of the trail is very technical as it crosses rocks and roots to summit and descend a large tree-covered hill. After descending the hill, the trail flattens out for 4-5 miles while it parallels the Meramec River on the way to Lone Elk Park. The Lone Elk end has a short but steep groomed climb to the trailhead parking lot.

Need to Know

There is a high water route that avoids the lower trail next to the river, however, you may still encounter an impassable section depending on the severity of flooding. If the trail is muddy, please do not ride it. You may encounter equestrians, please use proper trail etiquette.

Description

The Chubb trail is an out-and-back type ride with two trailheads - one at West Tyson Park and the other at Lone Elk Park. The West Tyson end is more technical with a rocky and rooty ascent and descent before heading to the Lone Elk end along the flat river bottoms.

The Lone Elk end has a steep but groomed hill that heads straight to the flat river bottoms. The West Tyson end contains the Flint Quarry trail, which allows a rider to make a loop wholly within West Tyson Park.

History & Background

This area was mined by Native Americans for its high quality flint used to make arrowhead points. One of the trails inside West Tyson, Flint Quarry Trail weaves in and out of several hand dug pit mines dating back up to several thousand years.

Chubb is always challenging. But today's conditions were excellent, and I had a good but tiring ride. 14mi — 2h 00m

Very disappointed with Chubb. Tried riding from one end, gave up, tried the other end. Not worth the trip. Terrible shape, too many spots unpassable. 7.8mi — 1h 00m

Very rough trail surface. Ruts and un groomed rock. Some mud and fallen trees. Pretty steep terrain. The trail is not well maintained.
