Overview

The trails vary from easy to rocky and challenging, especially on The Layover. There will be a good amount of rock and expect a decent amount of climbing. The Meadow is a nice secluded area that is comprised of very easy trail through an opening in the woods with an overlook at the north end.

There is an alternate path around the Coleman Spring on Bindle Byway with interesting features if you want to see what else the park has to offer beyond the trail.

For more information on that, check the website.

Need to Know

The ride crosses Karnes, a somewhat busy street running through the park, several times. Be aware of road crossings and be sure to slow down and ensure no cars are coming.

Description

This ride is a good tour of the trails at Roanoke Park and maximizes the singletrack usage, only repeating trail segments in the opposite direction. It will come in somewhere over 5k of riding. There are a few minor connectors you can work in to get the mileage a little higher.

The ride starts from the community center and stays left on trails through The Layover and Gnome's Glen. From there, you have to take sidewalk to Devil's Dip, which you can climb up, then take sidewalk around the playground and cross Karnes to get on Bindle Byway. From there, stay right to do an out-and-back on The Meadow.

The ride continues by staying right on the way out and down to Karnes. However, you can always backtrack the previous portion and head back down Devil's Dip as an option, which is generally a fun descent. Take sidewalk back west to Gnome's Glen and follow that back to cross Karnes once more. Stay left to take KoldKar all the way back to the start.

History & Background

This park was neglected largely until trail building and ecological restoration efforts began in 2011. Now it is a local success story in urban park revitalization and cherished by neighbors and local trail users alike.

Rocky and very narrow since the summer overgrowth is in full swing. Homeless encampments all along the trail in the woods. Recommend riding elsewhere 2.2mi
