Description

This is a relatively non-technical ride with several hundred feet of climbing in just over three miles. This ride will afford stunning views of Cookes Peak and Rattlesnake Ridge. Additionally, you are met with beautiful views of the valley at higher elevations.

This ride begins where Cookes Canyon Road ends. A sign labelled "Public Access" and "Camino de las Remedios: Cookes Town" points you to the starting point. There is a small, makeshift parking area that can accommodate two pickup trucks. Cookes Canyon Road may not always be in good enough shape to accommodate low clearance vehicle, so it's best to have a higher-clearance vehicle for this ride.

The best time to do this one is on a late spring day when the wind isn't a factor so you can appreciate the high desert blooms or during the monsoon season on a day where rain isn't an issue. Otherwise, it's cold and windy in the winter and extraordinarily hot and dry during the summer.

Follow the main jeep road northwest until you begin to see the ruins of the old Cookes Mine and mining town. Several side roads allow for additional exploration of these long abandoned structures but use caution when exploring. Heading back is a rewarding and quick descent back to the parking area.
