Description

This trail alongside the Salas Reservoir starts in Maus de Salas and takes us back to the Neolithic, visiting two necropolises: the Maus de Salas Necropolis (with 2 "dolmens" i.e. funerary chambers: Casola do Foxo do Lobo and Casiña da Moura) and the Outeiro de Cavaladre Necropolis (with several funerary chambers).

This trail is located within the Gerês-Xurés Biosphere Reserve in the province of Ourense in the northwestern region of Galicia in Spain.

Some of the sections of this trail overlap with two other loops within the Serra do Xurés MBT Trail Center: Picos de Fontefría Trail (Trail 4) and Serra do Pisco Trail (Trail 5).

The MTB Trail center has a total of nine different trails outlined here.

Before crossing over the dam of the Salas Reservoir, we find the "Casiña da Moura" located right before the dam and the "Casola do Foxo do Lobo" right after it and placed on a small, natural viewpoint, close to a spot that connects this trail with Picos de Fontefría (Trail 4). Both are the most important dolmens (funerary chambers) of the Baixa Limia district and date back to the third millennium BCE.

After cycling along a track that borders the reservoir - where we can see several rocky formations - we will reach the bridge between the villages of Guntumil and of As Maus de Salas.

At this point of the trail, we can either follow Serra do Pisco (Trail 5) that would take us to the O Pisco refuge or we can cross over the bridge and continue with the archaeological tour and visit: the "Outeiro de Cavaladre" Necropolis that includes two "mámoas" (megalithic tumuli) where the remains of arrowheads and ceramic artifacts were found.

We will go back to the Reception Point, cycling along the narrow streets of the As Maus de Salas village, where we can visit what remains of the "Capela de Santa Baia" (Saint Eulalia's Chapel).
