Description

The Escarpment Trail is a popular hiking trail that begins at Route 23 near Windham and crosses the Windham-Blackhead Range Wilderness. Bikes are only permitted outside of the wilderness area on the first 1.3 miles of the trail until the first lean-to near the intersection with the Elm Ridge Trail.

The best way for mountain bikers to use this trail is to connect the Fun Loops to the upper loops in the Elm Ridge Wild Forest. This half-mile section begins at the intersection of Trail #6 and Levitate and includes a couple fun swoopy switchbacks and rocky waterbars.

I don't recommend riding the lower section of the Escarpment Trail between the parking lot and the Levitate- Trail #6 intersection. This section is popular with hikers and is arrow-straight, rocky, and steep without being a lot of fun. You'll have a lot more fun riding Outer Loop South.
