Overview

A rim tour of Rabbit Valley beginning on Zion Curtain connecting to Kokopelli Trail, the Overlook Trail, Western Mesa, Arch Loop, Adobe Trail, Western Rim, and ending on Rabbit Valley 2.

Need to Know

This is a MASSIVE one day ride. It requires a lot of wayfinding, lots of water and a love of the color beige. Use the MTB Project MTB Project mobile app to stay on course.

All Rabbit Valley trails are opened to motorized use. There are moto "whoops" along much of the route. These will test even the most patient rider's tolerance of our motorcycle brethren.

Description

From the Rabbit Valley parking area just south of I70, ride back across the Interstate and go left at a small parking lot climbing through a switchback. Top out and descend to a three-way intersection. Take a left and descend a mile to the state line. Continue another 1 1/2 miles to a drainage underpass below I70.

Ride towards a sign board and climb the road to the right. Note: Zion Curtain IS NOT the singletrack that begins just across I70. The singletrack begins about 1/2 mile up the doubletrack at a marker on the left.

Ride Zion Curtain to the rim overlooking Rabbit Valley then back down to the valley. Zion Curtain ends at a three-way road junction, with the fourth, eastern leg being the Zion Curtain singletrack. The Kokopelli Trail is the southern and western legs of the junction. Ride due west on Kokopelli Trail up a steep road section to the next rim west.

At the top of the climb is another three-way intersection. The Kokopelli Trail goes right at this junction. Ride left and after about 800 feet take a singletrack on the left side of the road. This is the Overlook singletrack which heads south through a primitive campground. Ride 6 miles south along the rim on Overlook to a saddle with a steeply descending road on the left (east).

Continue south through the saddle onto the Western Mesa trail continuing along the rim. Just keep close to the rim on the left and the singletrack will be obvious. Ride south 2 miles to the southern tip of the rim at the Westwater overlook.

The trail continues west along the rim, a little more looping. When the trail returns north to a doubletrack 3 1/2 miles past the overlook, go left (north) and take the first left spur onto the Arch Loop.

The trail crosses a small, natural bridge in the first half mile then continues a 2 mile long winding route (passing a left tee leading to the intersection of Harley Dome and BLM 191 - Kokopelli Trail) back to the saddle between Overlook and Western Mesa trails.

Cross the saddle and descend the aforementioned steep doubletrack back into Rabbit Valley. At the bottom of the 1/2 mile descent take a left onto Adobe singletrack at a fork. Climb to a ridge (this involves a short hike-a-bike) then ride a fun, ridgeline descent to a doubletrack road, across which begins Western Rim.

Climb Western Rim and ride to Rabbit Valley 2. Take Rabbit Valley 2 back to the parking lot.

Rough, low-quality trail for the area. Glad I did it, but not sure I'd do it again. 44.7mi — 5h 30m

Major fail. 12 miles got caught in lightning storm on ridge. Sheltered for one hour. Trail turned into awful Fruita clay. Much carrying on return. 23.8mi
