Overview

This loop ride gains you access to one of the best singletrack sections in the Kootenai National Forest. You can access this ride coming from either Bonners Ferry, ID or Troy/Libby, MT.

Need to Know

Trail is in heavy bear country. Lots of sign of bear along the way. Be sure to be "bear aware." Best to ride this in a group making lots of noise. Also, downfall can cover the trail until it is usually cut-out mid-June.

Description

If you only have a couple days to ride in the Libby/Troy area this trail is one not to miss. The uphill is a bit of a grind, but the downhill is well worth the efforts.

From the Stein's Market in Troy turn right on Hwy 2. Go 2.3 miles then turn left onto Forest Service Road 4402. Go 2.0 miles on FR-4402 then slight right to stay on FR-4402. Continue for another 5.9 miles. Turn left. Go 151 feet then turn right. Continue for 4.8 miles. Turn right onto Twentymile Leonia Road. Parking area and bottom of trail will be about 300 feet up Twentymile Leonia Rd.

From parking area ride up the dirt road (Twentymile Leonia Road) for approximately 1.5 miles. The road will fork. Take the left fork. At mile 5.7 the road will fork again - Take the left fork. The road becomes much narrower and heavily vegetated. Continue on the narrow road for another 1.5 miles. Look for the singletrack trail on your left that drops down the mountain.

The singletrack down Timber Mountain Trail is fast and smooth. It sweeps quickly through the trees. There are two major switchbacks on the trail, one of which is at the beginning. Look out for one rocky wet section that is relatively flat, but a bit technical. There is one hike-a-bike section towards the end of the trail. Its only about a 50-foot push uphill and then the trail continue back down the mountain.

Grind up the logging road for a workout. Well worth the reward of a challenging singletrack descent through the woods. Bear country for sure! 9.7mi — 1h 45m
