Need to Know

Parking is possible by the Puffin Marina, but is subject to parking fees. Otherwise park in town and ride out to the trailhead. Do NOT park by the farm or anywhere in the driveway. Dogs are strictly forbidden on this trail. The trail is not on any map yet but is explicitly permitted for mountain biking only by the landowners in the Höfn farm.

There is a nearby café in the Harbour House with restroom access. The local brewery in town KHB serves excellent after-ride beers.

Designed and built by Árni Magnusson with the priceless help of a few friends, financed by Fjord Bikes in cooperation with grants from Byggðastofnun the Iceland Regional Development Agency and Samtök Sveitafélaga the Municipal Government Association through the Brothættar Byggðir and Uppbyggingasjóður Austurlands funds, respectively.

Description

Starting close to the dome of Hellnakambur, the trail veers off the established doubletrack trail through the vegetation on the biker's left, going downhill. A short flat section leads into a right-hander, followed by an immediate rocky section requiring some precision handling. From there, the trail goes through bumps and rocks, winding toward a small rock garden. A couple of turns later, the trail becomes very rough with larger rocks and some short "paved" sections.

From there, the trail crosses the doubletrack trail again and goes through a relatively flowy section toward a tight left-hand turn and down a rocky slope to a couple of tight right and left-hand turns. A rock garden leads to a flowy downhill section followed by a short climb. From there, the trail gets less rocky and, for a few turns, leads down toward a fun but tricky and tight rut inside a small gully.

A left-hand turn from there takes the rider into a descent back toward the doubletrack trail, with a short climb and flat section preceding the crossing. After the crossing, the trail hugs the side of a gully, snaking downhill in a faster and flowier section, which shoots the rider back out into the doubletrack trail. From there, the doubletrack trail takes a couple of wide turns and gets steep fast.

This steepness is sustained to the first gate into the farm Höfn. From the gate, follow the doubletrack to the bridge over the creek and through the grass to the second gate. To exit the trail ride the driveway out to the road.

The tight left hand turn after the first doubletrack crossing requires slowing down to avoid overshooting it.

Some sections have no soil to speak of so they were paved with large flagstones found nearby.
