Overview
This trail is the summarisation of all the best trails.
Need to Know
Fresh Pond's Parking is ONLY for Cambridge residents, Handicapped people, and the Water Department, with plates or permits showing.
Description
This trail is a very open trail that rarely has obstacles but is still very fun to do. The terrain is mostly paved, except for a section that detours onto
South Great Medows Connector and
North Trail. This section is 100% skippable and if skipped, would make the trail 100% paved. The speed limit on the
Minuteman Bikeway section is 15mph for safety reasons. It should be noted that while you are in
Fresh Pond Loop, dogs may be unleashed, as long as they do not go into mowed, grassy areas (including Kingley Park) and respond to oral (verbal) commands.
History & Background
Minuteman Bikeway's route closely resembles the path takes by Paul Revere in 1775, which was the same path that popularized the American Revolution. After this, in 1846, the path became a railroad, east of the Lexington & West Cambridge Railroad, and west of the Middlesex Central Railroad. The track can still be seen today in Arlington, near the Uncle Sam plaza in front of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum. Railbanking the line was first considered in 1974, 3 years before passengers couldn't ride on the train, and 7 years before the train was no longer used at all. In 1991, the conversion was approved, and construction started. Then, in 1992, the section between Arlington and Lexington was finished. In September of 1992, the connection between Lexington and Bedford has to be delayed due to water main construction. The section was then opened in May of 1993. In 1998, the trail was extended to go from East Arlington to the Alewife station. Source:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minuteman_Bikeway
