Overview
Despite its short length, Rocky Mount's Battle Park has innovative features that use the existing topography (creeks and boulder fields), in additional to built features like skinnies, drops, and jumps.
Need to Know
Parking is free. The lot at the starting point can sometimes be full; if that's the case, navigate to Sunset Park and begin your ride from the western edge of the loop.
Description
Although this trail system can be ridden both directions, we recommend riding the section east of 43 counterclockwise, and the section west of 43 clockwise. You'll start out at the main trailhead where there are bathrooms and water. You'll then traverse a section along the Tar River with a few boulder features -- or optionally, test your technical skills from the top of the large boulder shield, where there are several wooden ramps built into the rock face, creating a variety of unique progressive features!
The trail along the river will continue east as mostly flowy singletrack that crosses the greenway a few times, with one optional challenging shortcut directly through the creek (or take the bridge ride-around). The trail will head back west north of the greenway as more flowy singletrack with some tons of line alternates, rocks, skinnies, jumps, and a gap jump across the creek. Everything has a beginner ride-around. The final section has another boulder field with a huge variety of line options -- challenge yourself to roll down different ways, and take the return trail back to the top to do it again!
To ride the western section, carefully cross NC43 just beyond the parking lot and take the boardwalk west for ~0.3 mi. Keep an eye out for the start of the trail on your left, which is a steep entrance. Take the left fork to go clockwise. You'll encounter a short jump line, optional technical rock feature, and some small kickers as you wind around. You'll cross the greenway several times. Use the boardwalk and pedestrian crossing to return to the parking lot.
History & Background
Battle Park is rich in history as the site of Rocky Mount's first post office and theatre, as well as a Civil War battle in 1863 against the Union Army. The name "Rocky Mount" comes from these granite shields that are a feature of the park!
