Overview

A huge loop of unpaved, packed, gravel and dirt roads that circumnavigate the Cedar Mountain range west of Grantsville. This route is suitable for an epic XC or epic gravel loop.

Description

Start at I-80 and just off the Delle frontage road and fork southwest on the Delle Hearty dirt road. Fork west (right) on the Hastings Pass road intersection and you'll skirt north of the Cedar Mountains. Turn left (south) on the Cedar Mountain Road for 20 miles where you'll wind in and out of the small drainages at the western base of the Cedar Mountains. At Rydalch Pass you'll climb up canyon to the road summit just south of Tabbys Peak. Descend Rydalch Pass and stay left on Cedar Mountain Road (East) to continue east and north for 22 miles back to the Hastings pass intersection that you were at the beginning of the ride. This time continue north to backtrack on Delle Hearty back to the start.

History & Background

Race Description from website: "Explore a land only 45 minutes west of downtown Salt Lake City where hundreds of wild horses roam. It's wide open. It's challenging. And all of it's unpaved. During this adventure, you'll get to experience a landscape few in Utah have traveled. Home to one of Utah's largest herds, estimated to include around 700 horses, the Cedar Mountain Wilderness contains a total of 100,000 acres and is part of the over 109 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. The Wild Horse travels across the Hastings Cutoff, a historic portion of the California Trail and the route used by the Donner-Reed party in 1846. This segment is a part of the National Historic Trails route stretching from Independence, Missouri, to California and Oregon."
