Overview
The Durango Mesa Park is a massive 1,850-acre parcel of land that was purchased by the local Katz family and gifted to the City of Durango. This park will eventually be home to the largest municipal bike park in the nation, along with innumerable classic singletrack trails. The first trails built on the property, shown here, are a "demonstration project" to give local residents a taste of what's to come. And if the popularity of these new trails is any indication, Durango Mesa Park, once completed, will be a mega hit!
The route shown here includes both of the intermediate jump trails, but fair warning: there's a large jump in difficulty from the beginner jump trail to the "intermediate" trails. The lips are tall and steep, and some of the tables are long. That said, mountain bikers with a penchant for jumping and railing berms will absolutely love the latest additions to Durango's expansive trail system.
Description
The new jump trails are accessible directly from the popular Horse Gulch trailhead. Begin by climbing the new singletrack uphill to climber's right of the trailhead, known as the "
Mesa Connector." This consistent climb leads to a four-way intersection. Bear right to keep climbing to the hub at the top of the meadow.
At the hub, you can choose to either descend the Beginner or Intermediate trail. You can also choose to pedal multiple laps in the meadow on one or both of these trails before finishing the ride back down to the trailhead.
Once done pedaling laps, head up the
Meadow Knob Connector trail to the four-way intersection, and bear right to pedal up to the top of the
Intermediate Downhill.
The
Intermediate Downhill finishes this fantastic ride with a set of beautifully sculpted tabletop jumps and absolutely massive berms. The fast swoop and flow is fantastic in its own right, with the hangtime as a cherry on top. This trail is an instant classic that you'll have to ride more than once.
