Description
This section of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) makes up one of the tougher sections of the Butte 50/100 mountain bike race held every year in July. The most common reason that people ride this particular section of CDT is because they are training for said race, or riding a similar route. Outside of this, and perhaps the remote feel of the trail, there is little motivation to ride this trail due to the lack of drawing qualities such as views, summits, features or flow. The constant ups and downs, rock obstacles and primitive nature of the trail can make this a slow ride. The trail will be cleared of deadfall leading up to the Butte 100 Race, but outside of that it could be a gamble.
Trail is most commonly accessed from the South at the Highlands Trailhead on Highlands Road where there is a toilet and a trail map. The trail is accessed from the North End via
Bear Gulch ATV Trail. There is a wooden signpost at the trail junction, but it could be easy to miss if you aren't paying attention.
