Overview
An enjoyable climb of mixed singletrack and beautiful road, mixed in with technical, fun descending. Both trails on this route, while intermediate in difficulty, are favorites in Santa Barbara.
Need to Know
There are restrooms at parking, as well as a water fountain to fill bottles. The park at the end of the Jesusita descent also has restrooms and water. This route may have poison oak along it at times of year.
Description
The route starts from rocky nook park, where there are amenities like a bathroom. From here, climb up the park Singletrack to tunnel road. Tunnel road will take you up and onto dirt doubletrack, which leads to a short 2 minute technical descent down lower tunnel trail. After that warm up, you'll climb for another 10 minutes to inspiration point, one of the best views in town. From there, it's all downhill down Jesusita trail through Stevens park. You'll cruise neighborhoods on the way back to the car.
This ride consists of largely untechnical climbing up pavement and dirt road, with one short section of technical climbing up inspiration point trail (Eastern Jesusita). The descending on this route is difficult in nature, with flowy sections interspersed with frequent technical rock gardens. The more times this is ridden, the easier it becomes.
History & Background
You'll pass by the old underground tunnel which carried water to town in the early 1900s, as well as a litany of sandstone boulders that hold pictographs and other archeology from hundreds if not thousands of years prior. This trail was built for access to the tunnel that allowed for mining to occur on the other side of the mountains.
