The best parking to approach this trail is at the Fraesfield Trailhead. It could also be reached from the
Tom's Thumb Trail, or by entering from the private land on the west or from 128th St.
Description
Leaving the
Gooseneck Trail about two miles from the Fraesfield Trailhead, the trail travels west, gently gaining elevation. After about 0.5 miles, at a trail exiting the preserve, the Redbird Trail turns mostly south for about a mile, first gaining, then losing then gaining elevation before intersecting Service Road #3.
The remainder of the route is technically Service Road #3, but is the logical continuation of the Redbird trail, so it is included here. Traveling mostly downhill for almost a mile, the trail returns to the
Gooseneck Trail at the confusing meeting of the
Gooseneck Trail, the
Saguaro Nest Trail, Service Road #1 and 128th St.
The trail travels through terrain typical of the region on decomposed granite trail surface occasionally passing by granite boulders and crossing a number of small sandy washes. It makes a nice alternative to following the
Gooseneck Trail both directions.
