Family Friendly
Very easy to follow route with great views, wildlife, and moderate climbing.
Overview
This lap includes all the recent trail builds as of October 2021. There have been many improvements not yet mapped on MTB Project so I'm adding them all here. I thought this area was a waste until this lap. Super fun and fast, all singletrack with jumps, berms and killer views.
Need to Know
Lots of bathroom and picnic options, great for little ones and beginners.
Description
You'll park on the side of the road right before the uphill climb, there is a pull off here. You start by biking uphill to the gate, then you get a nice downholl ripper. At the bottom you go right and cross 2 bridges and then go left and continue downhill on a nice sweeping track. At the bottom you'll hit the T in the trail and you go left to another T where you once again go left. You'll stay straight for short bit until turning right and heading straight up hill. This climb is short but pinchey.
Once you get to the next T you take a right and continue up to the top. Head all the way down to the bottom of the dam and hit the big jump ledge on the right if you're feeling big. At the bottom of the dam go left on the singletrack and head up the dam. On the backside of the dam you have a nice long downhill speed track.
Once you get all the way to the bottom you'll pass over the pavement twice and start up the main climb for the loop. You'll snake up the hill and nothing it too steep along the way. Once at the very top you'll head down the backside which is loose and real fast, watch out for the loose left turn and don't go for a tumble. You'll hit a switchback and stay right until you jump across the road.
Head down the road a bit until you see the fishermans trail on the right, take this and then reconnect with the trail you were on shortly. You'll stay on mt carbon loop across the bridge and then turn right, shortly after that right turn you'll go left to hit cottonwood trail and head uphill over the road. As you head through cottonwood trail you find some of the most fun sweeping trails along the creek and very few people.
Once you get to the end of cottonwood you'll head right on the doubletrack and the quickly left onto the uphill trail back to mt carbon trail. You'll take a right onto mt carbon which mirrors the road for a bit. As it heads down away from the road take the new trail on the left after the rolling jump it'll connect with owl trail and cuts out some boring doubletrack. You'll then head towards the creek again and cross the bridge to the other side.
From there you get the classic cross-country grinder along the creek. Most speed wins! At the end of this track you'll take a sharp left and head towards the road before you get to the last picnic spot. Cross the road and continue on the trail next to the gate. This will head back to the main T you come to at the start, take a left and head back up the hill you descended at the beginning, but only for one small hill and then take your first left onto the new trail that goes by the picnic area. This will swoop around and uphill where you'll see another new trail cut on the left.
Take this new trail and it'll mirror the canal all the way back to the main road, super fun new section of trail here with lots of promise. This will take you to a gate where you can then follow the trail along the road that takes you right back to your car.
Feeling stronk this day? Turn around and do it in reverse. for that 20 miler.
