Overview

This tour lets you ride many of the trails in the Golden Horseshoe area getting a great taste for some favorites that you can then expand from.

With all the mining roads it is easy to get lost in the Golden Horseshoe, this tour will help you navigate around the area, finding all these trails. Experience sweet descents like Side Door, technical descents like Fuller Trail, great drops on Hard Luck Trail, swooping turns on Slalom, along with many other nice trails in an easy-to-navigate route.

Need to Know

DO NOT reverse this route. Side Door and Hard Luck Trail are one-way descent only trails, Slalom is best ridden down, and Back Door is intended to be the climb back up to Side Door.

Description

The Golden Horseshoe has so many mining roads and trails, it can be tough to find your way around without getting lost. This tour is designed to give a taste of much of the great singletrack up there. I've started this on CR450 as a convenient place to start and end. You can start from town by riding up CR450 (where the 7/11 is) or going up Lower Flume Trail to Upper Flume Trail as well.

Bring along the MTB Project mobile app on your phone, print this routing detail, and/or drop the GPX into your bike computer to make life easy. Have fun ...

- Climb on CR450 (Forest Hills Dr.) for less than a mile (this is the only pavement). Pass under the "!Western Sky Ranch" sign, around the left switchback, CR457 is shortly on your right
- CR457 is the start of Chantilly Trail
- Shortly the Chantilly Trail singletrack breaks off on your left
- Cross the dirt road and you're on Western Sky
- Hit the pavement and dirt fork, take the dirty (left) fork, Western Sky picks up again on your right
- At the end of Western Sky don't go through the wood gates, instead turn hard right onto Fall Classic Trail
- Pass Hard Luck Trail on your left, go through the gates and onto Extension Mill Road
- At the intersection with the power pole turn right on the GH25, not straight on GH24
- One Step Over Cabin Trail will be on your left. There is a Breckenridge trail map sign right there.
- This is a nice long 2.8-mile climb. At the top is the One Step Over Cabin, check it out.
- This is the intersection with the Prospect Hill Road, turn right and shortly you'll see wood railing and the top of Side Door on your left
- Side Door has numerous forks with alternate trails that all converge. Choose your own adventure on the fast and fun descent.
- At the bottom of Side Door you'll go through wood gates, turn left onto Minnie Mine, shortly you'll reach another fork, take the left fork that looks slightly uphill to continue on Minnie Mine then it will drop toward French Gulch Road
- Shortly before the road, turn right onto X10U8. Take X10U8 all the way to French Gulch Road then turn left up the road for a few hundred yards.
- Here you'll see Minnie Mine on your left. Time to climb to get back to more adventure. Keep climbing on Minnie Mine and you'll pass Side Door and shortly you'll see Back Door on your right
- Back Door is a nice trail designed to be the climbing path to get back up to Prospect Hill Road. Enjoy the climb, you'll be at the top pretty quickly.
- Right on Prospect Hill Road , past Side Door and the top of One Step Over Cabin Trail and you'll come to a road intersection, turn left on GH39
- Quick bend left then watch closely for Harum Trail on your right. It is not marked!
- Harum Trail ends at Fuller Trail, turn left and enjoy the descent
- At the bottom of Fuller Trail, turn left then take the left fork slightly uphill on GH24. Pass back under the power pole you saw earlier and onto Extension Mill Road, through the gates onto Fall Classic Trail, Hard Luck Trail will then be on your right
- Hard Luck Trail is not for the faint of heart, take the steep drops if you're up for it. Cross a couple dirt roads, then at the bottom turn right onto Upper Flume Trail
- At its end, turn right onto Gold Run Road. You'll pass Little Corporal on the right, it stops climbing taking a nearly level line to Slalom. Bite the bullet and take the last 200' of climbing on Gold Run Road
- Slalom will soon be on your right (Western Sky and Fall Classic Trail intersection where you were earlier is on your left)
- At the bottom of Slalom, you'll naturally flow onto Upper Flume Trail
- Follow the well-signed Upper Flume Trail through the Highlands neighborhood back to your starting point
