Need to Know

The trail continues past the mapped portion here, but eventually descends to the Wilderness boundary at Joaquin Canyon Trail #47 where bikes are not allowed.

Description

The first few grueling miles of the Salazar Trail #14 may have you questioning why you are here, but once you make the rim, you'll question whether you ever have to leave...

After the initial three-mile ascent – which is at times, rocky, loose, and/or steep – the trail rolls comfortably along the edge of the mesa high above Echo Amphitheater with spectacular views of Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu Lake and eventually the Chama River.

Usually ridden as an out-and-back, the far south sections are at times loose and difficult to follow. One quick switchback in particular very near the South Rim may give you pause.
