Overview
The route travels between two historical sites: Ft. Hoskins and Valsetz. Ft. Hoskins was built by the U.S. Army in the mid- 19th century. Valsetz was a timber company town that was established in 1919 and had a population of 3000 in its heyday. It was decommissioned and destroyed by the company in 1984 and only foundations remain.
Need to Know
This area is remote and uninhabited and you may encounter log trucks. It would be easy to get lost among the maze of logging roads, and so a GPS, the
MTB Project mobile app, and good map skills are recommended.
Description
The first six miles of the route is on the county road Luckiamute Rd / Wildwood Rd. That turns to gravel after 4.3 miles of pavement.
At mile six, the road passes a gate onto land managed by a private timber company. The gate is typically open and recreational use is permitted, except during fire season (often from July 1 to October 1). Watch for log trucks, particularly during weekdays.
The route follows an old railroad grade for about eight miles of gradual climbing. The road then climbs about 300' in about a mile to the highest point on the route before descending slightly to Valsetz.
