Need to Know

There is no reliable water along the route. A creek near the 1300m elevation provides water for dogs most of the time.

Description

Turn left off SH63 on to Tophouse Rd for 800m. A Dept of Conservation sign at a locked gate indicates the start of the Beebys 4WD road. Ride 800 metres up this road to the marker post at the start of Wots up Doc. The road is quite steep and an easier graded track to bypass the road will be completed by autumn 2020.

Wots up Doc climbs from 817m elevation to 1200m on an 8% grade with numerous switchbacks through thick scrub, open tussock grassland, and beech forest. Parts of the trail utilize easier parts of the 4WD road and from 1200m on it follows the road and is quite steep.

There are great views down the Wairau Valley and towards St Arnaud and Lake Rotoiti. For intermediate riders who are prepared to walk steeper parts of the road, this can be a good out-and-back ride.
