A moderately steep, straight climb, no switch backs, and a forest road connector to the fun several mile downhill.

You must ride up through a subdivision on county road to access the trail start. Then it finishes through a private ranch property which owners graciously allow mountain bikers through on.

Overview

South of Helena, get on the frontage road at Clancy, Montana and drive north 2.3 miles. Park on the frontage road where the ranch road meets the frontage road. Ride north on the frontage road about 0.3 miles. And take a right on the Pine Crest subdivision road and ride About 1 mile to the trailhead. There is really no parking up in there, so respect private property, park on the frontage road and ride to the forest service trailhead.

Description

The trail climbs up through mixed coniferous forest and the possibility exists of seeing deer, elk, or bears. I don't worry too much about bears in this area, but I bring bear spray. The climb is pretty much straight, so there is no shame in pushing some of it. At the top, you intersect a forest road then head south and you can access north fork or south fork of strawberry back to your vehicle. If you want a side trip, you can ride up to Strawberry fire lookout off the forest road. The trail down north fork to south fork of strawberry and on out, with the exception of the last about half mile which is a ranch road, is really fun. Several water bars provide a little airtime if you have the speed. There are also some giant boulders (not on trail) in the area that are really kind of cool. Ride on.
