This is a machine-built trail with gentle climbs and descents and a fairly smooth trail surface. It was built specifically for the West Virginia NICA youth league race.
Need to Know
Harrisville and nearby Ellenboro, WV both have gas stations and dining options. The North Bend Lodge has dining and overnight accommodations. This riding area is in close proximity to other trail systems at Mountwood Park, Wayne National Forest and the Marietta Trail Network and fits well with a multi-day riding trip to the region.
Description
This trail is best accessed from the Cokeley Campground near Harrisville, WV. There is a large parking lot on the right when you first pull in to the campground. If you continue toward the camping area, you'll find a small gravel parking lot next to the restrooms.
From the lower gravel parking lot, ride back up the road and turn right into the grass at the edge of the field. This is where the trail begins. Each end of the trail empties into the open grass at this point. Taking the trail to the right will lead you counter-clockwise around the loop. Taking the trail to the left will lead you clockwise on the loop. This description is counter-clockwise.
The trail starts by rolling along the hillside overlooking the lake, then traverses the edge of a field within view of the final portion of the trail that you'll finish on. After a right-handed switchback, the trail descends to a road crossing. At the road crossing, continue straight across toward the small storage shed then turn right to get back on the singletrack. After a brief climb and descent, the trail joins a gravel road. Turn right off of the trail and immediately take another right.
After approximatley 100 yards, turn left onto another section of gravel road that begins climbing. After roughly another 100 yards, watch for the singletrack entering the woods on your right. From here, the trail continues to gradually climb along an open hillside. This is the biggest climb on the loop. After a left-hand switchback, the trail begins descending then traverses a deep ravine before wrapping back around to the start. The trail is designed to ride well in either direction. Enjoy!
