Need to Know
This trail is shared by hikers and 4x4 vehicles, although there is almost zero chance of seeing any of them. You're far more likely to encounter grazing sheep. It is then important to be respectful of the animals and slow down to let them get out of the way. There are a few unbridged river crossings on the way and some of them are not exactly rideable, so bring warm dry socks and shoes for when you finish.
Description
This trail follows the old riding track up to Sandaskörð mountain pass. It is no longer in use as such and sees very little traffic. The trail starts from the old farmhouse at Hólaland and is part of the Hólaland - Stórurð hiking trail. You start by entering through a closed steel gate and following the doubletrack past the house, through the wooded area. From there, you start climbing a mostly easy grade up through the meadows.
As you go along, the trail will reveal progressively more of the highlands in front of you, with views of the high mountain passes to the south on your left. Meadow will turn to marsh and then to rock as you climb. After a while, you'll come to a small river which must be crossed. It is possible to ride the crossing, but know your feet will become wet. The water is safe to drink and very refreshing.
After a while you'll come to a small plateau where there is another river to be crossed. This one is larger and has bigger rocks in the riverbed, so walking through is recommended. From here, you're in the highlands and there are easy grades for the most part with occasional small river crossings. As you reach the top, the trail starts winding up to Sandaskörð mountain pass. This is the high point of the trail. From there, you go down the same way.
This trail is not particularly difficult, but it won't send you to sleep. It is a true alpine experience, with real river crossings, possibilities of harsh weather, and little-to-no mobile phone reception. It is also the gateway to other trails that will be added in the future.
