Overview

The first part is a bit of asphalt heading west out of the Shell, WY. You then have about 8 miles of gravel that slowly lead up Horsecreek Road, revealing spectacular views of the Big Horn Mountains. Then, you hit two track that climbs and leads you right to the base of the Big Horn Mountains. The views are amazing! From here it's pretty much down hill on two track. Be careful there are a few steep portions and some rocky portions. Once you get back to Hwy 14, take a right to lead you back to Shell.

Need to Know

Shell Campground and the Fossil Rock Tavern in Shell can provide meals and cold beverages. Shell Campground offers spaces for RV's, Trailers, and tent, and they also have cabins for rent.

Description

Leaving Shell, you'll head west on US Highway 14. Take these first few miles of pavement as an opportunity to warm up your legs. In 2.5 miles, turn right onto County Lane 36 and then in another mile turn right on Beaver Creek Road. This area is rich with agriculture and history. In a few more weeks the cows will come down from the mountain and spend the winter in this area.

Warmed up? Good – because until this point you've actually been headed downhill. Time to to hit the gravel and start climbing. Turn right on County Lane 31. In about 2 miles, you'll turn left Horse Creek Road. Climbing in earnest now, the Big Horn Mountains will appear before you. In the distance you can see what the locals call the "W".

In about 3 miles you'll run into an aid station. We think you're ready for a little more adventure now. Turn around at the aid station and head about a 1/2 mile back and take the trail to the left. A nice hard pack two-track trail will take you up to some truly spectacular views.

After a few miles you've arrived at the "top" of the course and you've gained about 1500 feet. Only about 6 miles until you're home and it truly is all downhill from here. Continue on the course for about 4 miles until you reach US Highway 14. Take a right and enjoy the easy asphalt back to Shell.

Victory is yours!
