Description

This upper section of the Ruby Jewel Trail (as designated by CO State Parks here) has nice tread through beautiful forest and heads into the high alpine. Be ready for the steep incline, though, as this trail gains elevation in a hurry.

There is a creek crossing with a split in the trail, one side for horses and the other for hikers. I'm not sure which way bikes are intended to go. About a third of the way up the trail, there is a junction with the Hidden Valley Trail. It is a sharp left turn with a sign that says Kelly Lake Trail. It comes in the middle of a steep climb so if your head is down you could miss it. The downhill direction could be really fun but it does get broken up by the creek crossing and an extended log crossing over a marshy area.
