Need to Know
Look for an alternate loop at about 0.8 miles by taking a left. It's very technical and most will end up hiking.
Description
At the top of the
Blackridge trail, if you take the left fork (preferred climb, and best way to do the Mustang loop), you'll start an easy climb that has two technical rock gardens that are relatively easy to navigate. Right after the second rock garden, you'll wrap around from heading northeast back to heading south. This a a great place to step off the trail and enjoy the views.
Next, there's a slight downhill section followed with another easy/intermediate climb. As you climb and gradually turn back to the northeast and the saddle, you'll pass several great jump and terrain features that have been built into the trail as alternatives to the main trail. These are fun if you use this section coming downhill.
Once you reach the saddle, there is a left fork that will take you around the peak to the northeast of the trail. Use caution, as this is a very technical, rocky climb but is very short and can easily be hiked. There are great views if you decide to take the short alternate loop to the left. Skip the technical loop by taking the right fork. Follow the trail around the corner now heading south and up the climb with a few switchbacks up the spine of the ridge.
At the top of the ridge, you'll come to a fork at the end of Mustang trail. Here you can take a left and head down to the
Juniper Canyon trails or take a right and enjoy the Eric's Downhill trail that will take you back down to
Blackridge.
