Overview

This is a beautiful and well-maintained wooded lakeside route that meanders along the water line and inlets. It has good flow and some roller coasters with tight berms and turns as well as several bridges. The trail has been recently extended in April 2018 with plans to go even further out and back, and now extends all the way to the road, where a parking lot will eventually be built. With this new section comes a jump line.

Need to Know

Parking is across the street from the trailhead on Yanceyville Rd. The parking lot also serves the trailhead for the Blue Heron trail. Put the two trails together for a great workout.

To protect the trail, the Piedmont Fat Tire Society ( piedmontfattire.org/) posts open/closed conditions via Twitter based on weather conditions.

Description

The trail is predominantly hard packed clay with very few roots and rocks. As a year-round trail, there is seasonal leaf and pine-straw coverage. The most technical challenge is the berms and roller coaster on the north side of the trail split about a third of the distance into the trail from the trailhead (see Kingfisher Tech Option). There is some elevation change here and other segments.

As a two-way trail, there are bikers, hikers, and runners. Be alert to oncoming traffic.

Depending on weather and temperatures, expect to see lots of squirrels, some rabbits, birds, and the occasional deer or snake.

Riding north, go over the top of this left hand berm to continue north on the extended trail; go left around the berm to experience the technical section and return to the trail-head.
