This loop can be attached to Onion Mt. or Terrapin Mt. for a long, epic, back-country ride. Take the spur trail to check out the falls.
Park at Sunset Fields overlook parking on the Blue ridge Parkway and follow obvious paved path to trailhead. Follow trail to the left as you wind in a clockwise direction. At the first intersection turn left on to Cornelius Creek Trail
. This trail is fairly steep in some sections and is practically one continuous rock garden from top to bottom. Even with these technical characteristics this descent is very fun, just pay attention and choose your line accordingly.
At the end of the Cornelius Creek Trail
you'll arrive at a small parking lot by the creek take the apposing trail, Apple Orchard Falls, to start the climb back to the Parkway. Trail will split off to the left. Take this intersection to the gravel road, Apple Orchard Falls connector 18-A. Turn right on gravel road, FR 3034
, for a sustained climb. When you reach the T junction, take a right onto FR 812
to continue the climb back to the overlook parking lot.
