“A technical and adventurous loop which can thrill the most expert mountain bikers.”
— Mariano Berri
The route is open all year. Best time of year: March-October.
After a long ascent from Vira Gambarogno, an adventurous trail will take you down 4,266 ft (1,300 m) to Vira on one of the most adventurous singletracks in the entire region: a combination of technical and exposed challenges and good flow passages. The trail offers many fantastic views over Lake Maggiore and passes trough some typical stone houses for the Ticino region.
Need to Know
To avoid the ascent you can put your bike on the bus which goes daily from Magadino-Vira station to Alpe di Neggia in about 50 minutes. Check the bus-timetable, here
From Magadino-Vira SBB station, riders will proceed to Vira Gambarogno where the road takes you to l’Alpe di Neggia: a distance of about 8.45 mi (12 km) with an upward gradient of about 10%.
Once you pass Monti di Fosano, you'll find a less steep and straighter path. The enchanting view from Monti di Agra looks onto the summit of Monte Tamaro. After a last winding stretch up to the Alpe di Neggia with an elevation of 4,576 ft (1,395 m), you'll find a breathtaking panorama over Lake Maggiore.
The next 5 mi (8 km) will take you down 4,266 ft (1,300 m) to Vira on one of the most adventurous singletracks in the entire region: a combination of technical and exposed challenges and good flow passages. Descending from the Alpe di Neggia, the first part of the Carbon Trail
follows a flow trail alternating with well-maintained trails until reaching the river. Some parts are quite exposed and you need to be careful crossing the fords. The ascent on the way to l’Alpe di Trecciura is quite demanding.
You can speed up on the second part of the path for a long stretch from where you'll see a stunning panorama of the Piano di Magadino. Right after Monti di Vira, the last part of the trail zigzags and starts getting harder again, before you turn onto an asphalt path going to Vira and the lake, where you can take a refreshing plunge in the summer.
As an alternative, you can put your bike on the bus which goes daily from Magadino-Vira SBB station to Alpe di Neggia in about 50 minutes.
