“A different option to get up to (or go down from) the Backbone / North Backbone trails.”
— Marcel Slootheer
Note: This trail originally started as a 0.9mile section but now includes a new 0.6mile lower extension, built in November 2018, bringing the total up to 1.5miles.
This newer addition in the S-Mtn trail system connects from the Jalapeño trail ("Pepper trails"), crossing Spiral Drive, all the way up to the Backbone
/ Lil Rattler
/ North Backbone
/ 173 intersection. As an intermediate two-way trail it offers both a mini roller-coaster pump-track feeling on the way down (don't ride it just once, go back and ride it again to learn the nuances and get most out of it - it's what the locals do!), and a visually interesting climb on the way up. The steady 5% average grade makes for a fairly easy climb, but be aware of the exposure along some of the sections.
Look toward great views to the west, of town and S-Mtn to the south for a scenic experience.
This is a multi-use trail with a few blind turns, please be aware of much slower moving users along this route. Try to look far ahead to spot those other users to prevent surprises.
This trail was designed by Salida Mountain Trails, and built by Tony Boone Trails LLC.
