Coming from Washington DC, this race might have been a bit ambitious as my first MTB race. I don't know if the race still exists. I believe it was cancelled for a year or two. If it is still up and running, you probably won't find a more challenging 61-mile race anywhere. The course is predominately raced on fire roads, dirt, gravel, and some paved sections.
The first climb is fairly early and is 11 miles long with grades in the 14% neighborhood. Pretty tough. The second major climb comes at around the 30-mile mark and is around 5-6 miles long but much tougher.
The first climb starts steep, but has a few false flats to allow you to catch your breath and get some recovery. The second climb is probably around 10% and never levels off until the top. Just a total kick in the junk!
Overall, a great race and one I highly recommend if it's still around.
